In the picture : The picture on the front of the jar shows the famous granite rocks of Haytor. This famous Dartmoor landmark is a magnet for visitors throughout the summer and in the winter people can be seen sledging down its grassy banks. It is a very distinctive tor and resembles a foot (apart from the fact it has six toes). Its height is 1499ft. The tor is very accessible. The small village of Ilsington is close by and the bustling market town of Bovey Tracey is 2 miles down the road. Just past the tor is remnants of a old tramway which was used in transporting rocks from the nearby quarry to Stover canal. The rocks from Haytor quarry were used in the construction of London Bridge. The last rock to be cut was used to make Exeter's War Memorial. During the nineteenth century, steps were cut into the tor and a handrail fitted, making it easier for visitors to reach the summit. From the top of Haytor, it is possible to see Teignmouth, Exeter, Dartmouth, Princetown and Torquay amongst other places. |
