Great Staple Tor is on a ridge above the River Walkham.

The placename 'staple' derives from the word meaning tower, and alludes to the tor's granite formations which are said to resemble the towers of a great gateway. These formations, where granite blocks perch on top of each other, are sometimes referred to as steeples.

It is commonly referred to as simply Staple Tor but in the area there is also a Little Staple Tor, and a Middle Staple tor!
